Tomb Raider: Underworld

Tomb Raider: Underworld was apparently developed concurrently with Anniversary, which led to the team on Underworld being understaffed. I don't think it shows too much in the game. Gameplay has few quirks but also advancements. And there is a good finale to the game.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a remake of the original, a decade older Tomb Raider (1996). Essentially, Anniversary recreates the original in a newer engine with expanded environments and tells its story in a more comprehensible manner that was also altered to fit the following events of Tomb Raider: Legend. In Anniversary, Lara is hired by a rich businesswoman Jacqueline Natla to find an artifact called Scion of Atlantis.

Tomb Raider: Legend

The classic Tomb Raider games made by Core Design between 1996 and 2003 are too old for me to play now. They look terribly blocky and are no doubt extremely clunky to play: unapproachable for someone who didn't experience them back in the day. But I was interested to play the subsequent Legend trilogy (2006 -- 2008) which was developed the same Crystal Dynamics as most of the newest reboot ones.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Since Crystal Dynamics were busy, after having been tasked -- punished -- by Square Enix to make Marvel's Avengers, was the final Tomb Raider Survivor trilogy game developed mainly by Eidos MontrĂ©al instead. They didn't really take any risks and Shadow of the Tomb Raider turned out pretty much what I would've expected had it been made by just Crystal Dynamics. The gameplay felt instantly familiar, even down to keybindings. There are however some differences that I think show the Deus Ex prequel studio was handling the reins in this one.

Project: Snowblind

Developed by Crystal Dynamics and released in 2005, Project: Snowblind was evidently meant to be a multiplayer focused Deus Ex title. However, due to Deus Ex: Invisible War's somewhat undesirable reception, Snowblind was then set in its own, yet very similar universe. I don't know if that helped its sales but at least it spared the fans of the first Deus Ex game from another disappointment.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

Of all the possible days to to have Rise of the Tomb Raider released on, Square Enix chose Nov 10, 2015, which happened to be Fallout 4's release date as well. Surely that cost them at least a few copies sold at full price. The game was also a timed exclusive on the Xbox but I guess Microsoft made that worth it.

Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider (2013) was bit of an odd purchase for me as I had not ever played any game from the franchise. I guess the decision to buy it had something to do with me having the assumption it was developed by Eidos Montreal. As it turned out, the game was made by Crystal Dynamics, and only the publisher, Square Enix, was the same as with the newer Deus Ex games. But I did play through the game, and I did not totally hate it.
