I do find some of the character names in the series somewhat amusing, like how the smart scientist is called Mensah of all things. Meanwhile Tapan is funny because it's Finnish for "(I) kill". When the name started a sentence, I often first misread it as the verb instead of the name. Tapan is also close to Tapani which actually is a Finnish name. They inflect identically (I think) -- like the possessive case: Tapanin -- from which you can't tell which is the base form.
Tapan seems to be of Sanskrit origin. It's not unusual for those to look like Finnish words. Kamala, as another example, means horrible in Finnish. Pronunciation might be slightly different in their respective native tongues but in written text there's no such help.
